What is it?
Genre is a way of categorising different films based off of their conventions. It sets rules and guidelines for the studio to follow so that they don't go off topic, and it also helps to find a good target audience for the studio, so that they can attract the right sort of people that would want to go and see their film. Genre also sets up an expectation for the audience and tells them before they watch the film if it's for them or not.
What is a sub-genre?
A sub-genre is a subcategory within a genre itself. For example: historical fiction film, urban fantasy film. these exist due to there being people that love pacific parts of the genres. they are suited to a more niche set of customers.
What is a hybrid genre?
A hybrid genre is where two or more genres are mixed together to create one. for example: romantic comedy. these exist to boost the amount of people interested in a film by including two different genres. so in a romantic comedy it stereotypically brings in women for the romantic side and the men for the comedic side of the film. This is a hugely popular concept due to it meaning that couples will go and watch a film together and it will cater for both of them.
